What is this cage style?
It is a trendy, new cage type that allows you to build your own cage. It uses four main items to make the cage: grids, connectors, zipties, and corrufloor.
What are the dimensions of the grids and the holes in the grids?
14 inches by 14 inches with 9 holes across and 9 holes down. Each individual hole is 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch outer measurements, and 13/8 inch by 13/8 inch.
What are Zipties?
Zipties, or cable ties, are small black plastic fasteners that connect a cage by 'tying' it together. They are used together with connectors to provide greater stability.
What are Connectors?
Connectors are small black plastic pieces with slots that allow grids to connect together at the corners. The grids slide right into the slots.
What is CorruFloor?
Corrufloor, short for Corrugated Flooring, is a 14 inch by 14 inch square floor tile that is used to make the flooring of the cage. CorruFloor is fitted to the size of the grids and slides into place over wire grid to protect small animal feet.
Wait. Then what is CorruFloor made of?
CorruFloor is made of Corrugated Plastic. Corrugated Plastic is a specific type of plastic made from two layers of polymer connected by flutes, therefore commonly called twinwall plastic. A simple way of describing corrugated plastic is that it looks like ‘plastic cardboard.
Do grids go on the bottom of the cage?
Yes, grids go on the bottom of the cage, but only when you are using CorruFloor. The square floor tiles fit on top of the grid panel so that a small animal walks on soft, safe flooring.
What is the spacing between each grid when using connectors?
Half an inch.
What does 3x2 or 2x1 mean?
Cages are sized and labeled based on grids. Check out the Cage Sizing Chart for further details.
How do you put this cage style together?
Grids connect to each other using connectors. Flooring fits into place over grids. Zipties fasten each grid together for greater stability. Check out the Instructions for a more detailed explanation
Can this cage style be adapted to other small animals?
Yes, this cage can be used to make a home for ferrets, chinchillas, rats, etc etc etc. However, those animals are significantly smaller than a rabbit or guinea pig. Please be aware that with the current grids size we sell your pet may endanger itself by getting stuck in grids. If you are considering adapting this cage, please be cognizant of this issue and adjust the cage so that your pet can be safe and secure. It is the goal of Pets and People by M&P to have happy, healthy pets in a positive environment. In the future, we will have a cage type for smaller small animals. So keep your eye out!
I need flooring of a specific size and cut. Can you get that for me?
Yes, we can get you various sizes of corrugated plastic, and we also can do custom cuts for you. However, that service is coming soon, and should be available to you in the coming weeks.
Where does this cage idea come from?
Our kits are best described as Puzzle Cages. You are provided with all the pieces that you put together in any way to make your cage. So, this cage type has also been called a "Do It Yourself Cage." If you trace the origin of these DIY Cages even farther, they have been called "cubes and coroplast cages." 'Cubes' because the grids were originally sold as storage cubes, and 'coroplast' because the flooring is corrugated plastic. CavySpirit, a website actively focused on Guinea Pig Adoptions & Care, is where the idea of using grids and coroplast together to make an animal habitat. Pets and People by M&P appreciate their contribution to the small animal world, and grew the idea even more to make new, healthy and unique small animal homes.
